Baptism — what it is and what it isn't
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward confession. It is a public picture of dying to your old life and being raised to walk in a new one.
What baptism is
Going under the water pictures being buried with Christ. Coming up pictures being raised with Him to new life. It announces to heaven, to the church, and to the world that you belong to Jesus.
Jesus Himself was baptized, and He told His followers to baptize His disciples. To be clear, baptism isn't what saves you—salvation comes through faith in Jesus alone. But it is a huge step of obedience. It’s not an optional accessory or a style choice for your faith; it's about showing real loyalty to Him.
Romans 6:4
"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead... even so we also should walk in newness of life."
Matthew 28:19
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."
Acts 8:36-38
"See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? ... and he baptized him."
Do I have to be qualified?
You do not have to clean yourself up first. There is no waiting list for people who have their life together — nobody would qualify.
The only thing scripture asks for is genuine belief and repentance. If you believe Jesus is Lord and you've turned to Him, you're ready.
Acts 2:38
"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins."
Acts 8:37
"If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest."
Is baptism required for salvation?
Encouraged — not required. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ, not by water. The thief on the cross was never baptized, and Jesus told him, "Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."
So baptism doesn't save you. It testifies that you already have been saved. And because Christ commanded it, a believer who understands it should not put it off.
Luke 23:43
"Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."
Ephesians 2:8-9
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God."
1 Peter 3:21
"The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us... not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God."
I was baptized as a kid — do I need to do it again?
Ask yourself one question: when I went under, did I personally believe and repent, or was I doing what I was told?
If it was a real confession of your own faith, you don't need to repeat it. If you were too young to know what you were confessing, or you've since come to genuine faith, many believers choose to be baptized again as their own confession. That is not a lack of faith — it's honesty.
In Acts, people who had received an incomplete baptism were baptized again in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:4-5
"John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance... When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."
Water baptism vs. baptism of the Holy Spirit
These are two different things, and scripture keeps them distinct. Water baptism is something a person does to you; Spirit baptism is something Christ does in you.
John said, "I indeed baptize you with water... he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire." At Pentecost that promise landed: the Spirit filled them.
What does Spirit baptism look like? Boldness where you used to be afraid. Conviction that corrects you from the inside. Power to obey and to witness. Fruit growing in your character — love, joy, peace, patience, self-control. Sometimes gifts of the Spirit operating through you.
It is not a badge for elite Christians. Ask God for it, and keep yourself yielded to Him.
Matthew 3:11
"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance... he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire."
Acts 1:8
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me."
Acts 2:4
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Galatians 5:22-23
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance."
