How to fast — biblical fasting
Biblical fasting is going without food for a set time to seek God. It is not a diet plan, a detox, or a food-swap challenge. The point is to deny the flesh so the spirit can feast on the word and the presence of God.
What fasting is — and what it is not
In scripture, fasting means abstaining from food. It is not simply cutting out meat or sweets and calling it a fast. It is a deliberate emptying so that God fills you.
The aim is not to twist God's arm. It is to align yourself with His will, humble yourself, and walk in obedience. If you fast food and keep feeding every other appetite, you've only skipped meals.
Matthew 4:2
"And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred."
Matthew 4:4
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
Isaiah 58:6
"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free."
How to do it
Decide the length and stick to it — start honest, not heroic. Sunrise to sundown, or one full day, is plenty to begin with. Drink water.
Replace the meals with God. Every hour you would have eaten, read the word, pray, worship, sit in silence before Him. If you fast and fill the time with your phone, you've missed it.
Fast with a purpose: direction, breakthrough, repentance, someone you're carrying. Write it down.
Keep it between you and God. Jesus said don't advertise it — your Father who sees in secret rewards you openly.
Break the fast gently with something light, and thank Him.
Wisdom note: if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, on medication, or have a history of eating disorders, talk to your doctor and consider fasting from something else. God is not honored by harm.
Matthew 6:16-18
"But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret."
Joel 2:12
"Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning."
Acts 13:2-3
"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said... And when they had fasted and prayed... they sent them away."
